My name is Umaima, pronounced like “M-emma” and this is my fifth year in Common Energy and at UBC! I’m majoring in Economics with a minor in Philosophy, with a keen interest in applying that knowledge to urban sustainability. In my spare time, you can find me exploring Vancouver on my bike, obsessing over new music listening to podcasts, and drinking beers with friends. As someone who’s been in Common Energy since my first year I know first-hand that this year will continue to shape the UBC community with their innovative ideas and passion for sustainability. This year, I look forward to growing the organization on campus collaborating with different organizations and getting to know the new members!

ANA GARGOLLO (CO-DIRECTOR)13840418_1198321776856177_184502003_o

Hi everyone, I’m Ana! I’m in my fourth (and final!) year at UBC, in the faculty of Land and Food Systems in the Global Resource Systems program. I’m specializing in Urban Sustainability and I am super passionate about anything that has to do with it, especially grassroots projects that address environmental issues. I love hiking and camping and anything outdoorsy really, so I’m excited to come back to the Vancouver mountains after 6 months in Copenhagen!
I’m super excited for this coming year and seeing all the amazing initiatives that will come from it!

KIERA SCHULLER (ASSISTANT DIRECTOR INTERNAL)12916820_10208572739893220_3698006919646008258_o

Hi there! My name is Kiera, and I am a 4th year International Relations major. I am passionate about urban sustainability, sustainable food systems, and the legal issues surrounding climate justice and human rights on an international scale, which I hope to pursue some day in the realm of international policy and law. If not playing soccer or running, you can usually find me café hopping, wandering through old bookshops, or out dancing with friends. Being part of Common Energy has easily been a highlight of my UBC experience – nothing could beat being part of such an inspiring, warm and vibrant family, working to spread awareness and passion about sustainability at UBC.

AISHWI ROSHAN (ASSISTANT DIRECTOR INTERNAL)12916820_10208572739893220_3698006919646008258_o

Hi everyone! My name is Aishwi, and I’m a second-year science student studying Microbiology and Immunology, and Public Health! I am extremely passionate about finding solutions to global warming, marine and land waste, and spreading community awareness. I’m also the Founder of Vancouver’s Largest Clothing Swap, an event dedicated to reducing the amount of toxic waste produced in landfills as a result of textile accumulation by encouraging the recycling of materials. When not occupied with school and Common Energy, I also perform Indian classical dance professionally, dabble with some yoga, and drink excessive amounts of tea. If you have any ideas for Common Energy to take on this year, or want to know more about the organization, send me a message at commonenergyubc@gmail.com! I’m extremely excited for what this year holds for Common Energy, and I can’t wait to meet all you wonderful members.

Hey friendos-I’m in my 3rd year of Marine Biology doing a minor in Political Science. I have a strong love for all living things on our planet, particularly in our oceans, and am passionate about protecting the amazing biodiversity on Earth by making small lifestyle changes close to home to minimize our carbon footprint, and encouraging others to do the same. This is why I joined Common Energy, and why I am so thrilled and honoured to be a part of this amazingly diverse, hard-working, well-connected team! I love whales, coffee, and being in nature. When I’m not doing school or Common Energy things you can find me volunteering with baby seals or birds, swimming, biking, or running. If you want to become involved with CE’s external portfolio, or your club would like to establish a collaboration, we should chat! Find me on Facebook or shoot an e-mail to commonenergyubc@gmail.com.

TEAM COORDINATORS

Each of Common Energy’s 6 teams are guided by two co-coordinators that provide committee members with the tools to actualize events and and initiatives.

CAMPAIGNS COORDINATORS

ARIEL ZHANG

13515416_10206907594264492_2048742218_nHi! I’m Ariel, one of the coordinators of Campaigns this year! I’m in second year science, doing a combined major in biochemistry and chemistry. I’m thinking about doing a minor in creative writing or GRSJ but we’ll see. In terms of environmentalism, I am also one of the UBC sustainability ambassadors. This year I’m hoping to expand the mug-share program with Campaigns, we’d love to see it become a campus wide thing! In my spare time you can find me watching Netflix, playing quidditch, doing yoga, writing or reading! I also love any outdoorsy activity; hiking, kayaking and snowboarding are my faves! I am also part of Totem Park Residence Association as the Salish house president.

I’m in my 4th year in Geography at UBC. I’ve been part of CE since 2014, and love the mission the team strives for. I am passionate about sustainability, human rights, community building, and music. This year, I hope to foster team members’ ideas for campus sustainability initiatives, and I am excited to create a strong foundational partnership within the steering committee for the members’ ideas to grow from. Fun fact about me: I love words. I often try to puzzle out etymologies and check the dictionary to see if I was right.

Hi Everyone! My name is Seth and I am in my fourth year at UBC studying Electrical Engineering. I was a part of Common Energy in the Events and Outreach team last year and I’m beyond excited to work with you as the co-coordinator for Emerging Green Builders this year! I can’t wait to see what’s in store for this year. With the collaboration among this year’s team, I look forward to developing and putting into action new ideas and conversations around our approach to sustainability.

PAULA MARTINEZ

I am so excited to be a part of Common Energy 980128_10208572741893270_3161415003194696059_oagain this year! As a 2nd year Forestry (Natural Resources Conservation) student I am extremely passionate about nature, climate change and the future of the planet. When I’m not studying trees, I love walking along the beach, doing yoga with the UBC Yoga Club and spending time with friends with family. You can also find me scoping out quirky cafés and tap dancing when I get the chance. My goals for the year are to form a tight knit team and to extent Common Energy’s message to students who are regularly uninvolved in sustainability issues. I am looking to meeting so many kind-hearted and inspiring people and can’t wait to see what we’ll accomplish!

EVENTS + OUTREACH COORDINATORS

WINNIE KWAN

Hello! My name is Winnie, I’m a third year in the Land and Food Systems Faculty studying Global Resource Systems, and my spirit vegetable is a jalapeno pepper because they may be small, but they pack a punch! Also, I just like eating spicy things 😀 As one of the Events & Outreach team coordinators this year, I’m excited for all the events we’ll be hosting, and looking forward to sharing the Common Energy love to an even greater community of people! If I’m not hanging out with the Common Energy team, you may find me on False Creek waters with the UBC Thunder dragon boat team, running around the Macmillan building as an LFS|US Council member, having some laughs at a UBC Nerdfighters Board Game Night, or frolicking around in some gardens or urban farms in and around campus and Vancouver.

Heyo! I’m second year studying environmental sciences, but please don’t ask what I plan to do with the degree afterwards. It’s my first year as a leader and I’m hopeful it’s going to be a fun and eventful one! Fun fact: the absurdity of reality tv has me addicted.

FOOD + CONNECTIONS COORDINATORS

ALLISON PRITCHARD

My name is Allison and I am third year applied animal biology major. My first love is the outdoors – If you ever need a random outdoor gadget, I probably own it…whether it is a double hammock, a down bum warmer, a light-up frisbee, a water proof toilet paper holder, a blow up pillow, a blow up sleeping matt, a blow up paddle board or anything else you might be able to think up, I’ve probably got it! My love of outdoor adventure is the reason I am involved in the area of sustainability. I want to do everything I can to protect the natural world so that everyone can experience wonderful and breathtaking moments in nature and have the opportunity to connect with an Earth that is wild, clean and equitable; therefore, I have become involved with Common Energy and Parks Canada Club in an attempt to achieve this goal. After taking an agriculture course, I have also become quite passionate about the environmental impacts of food production. This year I am hoping to promote more sustainable food choices on and off campus – I don’t think there is any better way to promote a more environmental lifestyle than through people’s bellies.

SHAKTI RAMKUMAR DSC_0062

I am a third year student in Electrical Engineering, and I’m really interested in using existing technologies to reduce energy consumption, and basically anything energy and automation related! This is my second year as co-coordinator for the Food and Connections team, and I hope it will be our best year yet. Last year, we introduced the first ever Sustainable Restaurant Crawl at UBC, and also had fun workshops on making sustainable, vegan food choices as a university student. After all, our diet is the single largest contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, and it is our responsibility to not ignore it. This year, we’re hoping to expand some of our previous initiatives as well as brainstorm some brand new ones with our team. Food and Connections is not only about the food, but also about strengthening our bonds with our peers and our community by living a more compassionate lifestyle. A personal goal for me this year is to play with as many dogs as I possibly can, so if you or a friend have a dog that wants to play, please ask him/her to hit me up. Seriously. (Also open to cats, hedgehogs, elephants, etc.)

TANGIBLE SOLUTIONS COORDINATORS

CANDICE SIMMS13499896_1239102562767664_911420285_o

I’m a second year chemistry student. Along with Common Energy I’m also a member of the Tea club (because who doesn’t love a good cup of tea?) and the Pre-Med society. I’m addicted to yoga (especially hot yoga), travelling and camping. My first year was all about pursuing my passions and finding new ones I didn’t know I had. In the midst of the hustle and bustle of Clubs Day, I found Common Energy. I became a member of the Food and Connections team, and ever since then my passion for sustainability has sparked and continued to grow. I was able to feel a sense of community and even got the courage to finally go vegetarian (I’ve wanted to do it for so long). This year as co-coordinator of Tangible Solutions (which I’m very excited about), I hope to see Common Energy continue to reach out to even more students and show them that helping the earth doesn’t stop at sorting your recycling, it can be a part of many aspects of our everyday lives.

As a 2nd year Forestry (Natural Resources Conservation) student I am extremely passionate about nature, climate change and the future of the planet. When I’m not studying trees, I love walking along the beach, doing yoga with the UBC Yoga Club and spending time with friends with family. I am currently in my third year of Materials Engineering and originate from Toronto, Ontario. I joined Common Energy last year and was a member of the Zero Waste Team, and now I am the co-coordinator! I am thrilled to continue the projects and events our team started, and continue to educate students and faculty about sustainability practices. My goal is to (hopefully) make UBC a completely zero waste campus.

I am a 2nd year student hoping to pursue a degree in Honours Economics. I think I first became passionate about sustainability when I learned what non-renewable resources were in 5th grade. I became a vegetarian partly for environmental reasons that same year and never looked back. For fun, I like bird watching, chess playing, book reading and mindfulness meditating. I am so excited to hold Common Energy’s fourth annual Waste Audit and it make the most impactful yet!
