This year’s steering committee consists of members across all faculties who are enthusiastic and passionate about promoting sustainability on and beyond campus. We are excited to meet you all and please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions!

Sara Niyyati

Co-director

Hi everyone! I’m Sara, and I’m currently a 4th year student in the Faculty of Science majoring in Biology at UBC. I love sketching, knitting, sewing, and going for runs in the forest trails around my house. I also enjoy cooking and baking (but am not necessarily good at it, and can kind of make a big mess)! I first became interested in sustainability and environmental issues after watching the documentary Cowspiracy. Since then, I have been trying to take part in sustainability initiatives and adopt more eco-friendly habits as much as I can! This is my 3rd year at Common Energy and I’m really excited for the new school year!

Emiliya Huseynova

Co-director

Hello everyone! My name is Emiliya and I am super excited to join Common Energy this year! I am a 2nd year at Sauder and will be one of the co-directors this year. Outside my studies, I love cooking, traveling, exploring unknown places, and being in nature! I am always looking for new ways to live a more sustainable lifestyle, especially for zero waste. Hope to see all of you taking part in our projects this year!

Kieran Anand

Co- Director

Hi I’m Kieran and I’m currently in my second year at Sauder, working towards a concentration in sustainability. In my free time you will probably find me hanging out with friends, listening to music or watching movies (if you have any movie/music recommendations please let me know!!). I first became interested in sustainability in high school when I took part in the Friday’s For Future movement and have tried to live as an environmentalist ever since. I am so excited to share my passion of sustainability with you all!

Alison Tucker

Assistant Director External

Hey I’m Alison, and I’m in my third year studying Environmental Science! This is my second year with Common Energy and I’m super excited to meet more like minded people and help create a more sustainable community at UBC. I’m a big fan of thrifting, going to concerts, swimming in the ocean, and watching movies. I can’t wait to meet everyone this year!

Umamah Mokarram

Co-lead of Green Infrastructure

Hello! Umamah here, and I’m currently in my third year studying chemical engineering, hoping to go into the clean energy sector some day. I’ve been with the green infrastructure team for a year now, and this year the subteam is aiming to publish our stormwater management/rain garden report, so make sure to keep an eye open for that:eyes:. Outside of my studies, you can catch me at the gym or exploring Beautiful British Columbia with my family and best friends. Listening to hip-hop and brewing coffee are also two big loves of mine. Excited to be back with Common Energy, and can’t wait to meet new faces this year!

Jasmine Hathway

Co-lead of Green Infrastructure

Hello, I am Jasmine! I am currently a 2nd year transfer student (previously was in applied biology in LFS) in the NRC program in the Forestry Faculty. After moving to Vancouver in 2010 from South America, my passion for the natural world flourished. I acknowledge that I have had the opportunity to learn and grow on the unceded, traditional, and ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Addressing conservation issues will require input from all perspectives. Ecological restoration and educational outreach are interests of mine. The Stanley Park Ecology Society and Pacific Spirit Park Society are great organizations for those interested in research, education, and restoration work. I am also new to birding, so please reach out if you enjoy birding or know of any organizations or upcoming events! On the side, I enjoy practicing electric guitar and playing sports.

Sahel Mirrazavi

Lead of Food Choice & Climate Change

Hi! I’m Sahel, and I’m a second year biology student at UBC! In my free time, I love drawing and finding new music to listen too (recommendations are always welcome! 🙂 ) I’ve been passionate about sustainability for as long as I can remember. Specifically, I’m interested in climate justice after learning about climate changes impacts on developing countries and marginalized groups. Now, I’m trying to do as much as I can to minimize my own carbon footprint which led me to join Common Energy. I am super excited to be working with the committee this year and can’t wait to take part in its sustainable initiatives!

Kashish

Lead of Zero Waste

Hi! My name is Kashish and I’m a 3rd year Sauder student at UBC! Here’s a little about me. In my free time, I love to play badminton, watch movies, or listen to music and just hang out with my friends. During the pandemic, I became interested in sustainability when I transitioned to a Vegan lifestyle. Ever since, I have been really passionate about sustainability and I try to minimise my carbon footprint in every possible way. I’m super excited to be a part of Common Energy and can’t wait to meet everyone!!
